Last week was a busy one for Finley. She went over to her friend's house for her first real playdate. And she enjoyed it so much that we ended up having a second one throughout the week. But that's not all. She also went to her first birthday party.

I think I became so focused on everything going on with Crew that I forgot that Finley could play with friends too. And I must admit, having both kids off of my hands at the same time is such a bizarre feeling.

I am more than ready for this baby.

Crew started piano today. After picking him up from his lesson, all he had to say about it was that it was, "easy peasy lemon squeezy."

AND...his teacher said that he caught on so quickly that she ended up covering two weeks worth of material.

Rescue Mission

While at the beach this weekend Crew noticed a bird that had washed up on shore and was in need of rescuing.

With our shovel and Tonka truck Dev and Crew saved the bird from getting swept out into the ocean. Then the kids fed it crackers and stayed close by it until we left. They had a hard time leaving it. I'm sure it didn't survived. It could hardly move it was hurt so badly. But it was neat to see the kids nurture this injured animal and want the best for it.

Christmas 2011

We traveled to Idaho to celebrate Christmas with family. Our week there was full of fun events none which included any snow activities because there was no snow. All my talk to the kids about building snowmen, snow angels, eating snow cones and snowmobiling will have to wait until next year. However, Crew's grandma and grandpa Belnap did take him to Grand Targhee Resort for his first skiing experience. I don't think he mastered the bunny hill but he had a great time and wants to learn how to ski better as long as he doesn't have to ski off a helicopter.

Our Christmas party this year, put on by my mother in law, was focused around South Africa. That is where Devin served his mission and the country is also linked to his family heritage.

She cooked all sorts of their traditional foods including mealie pap, baked squash, chakalaka, and kotas bunny chow. They may sound strange but they were actually quite tasty.

The kids played Santa's elves by helping to pass out gifts.

Christmas morning was full of excitement. Lots of laughter and fun followed by church and reading and acting out The Christmas Story to keep our focus on the true meaning of Christmas.

The kids were singing Christmas songs.

Devin was being obnoxious and I was being annoyed.

We were trying to spark conversation with the kids and make them laugh but they were so focused on decorating their cookies that they wanted nothing to do with us. So Dev and I were being dorks on our own.

Crew was dying to meet Santa this year and Finley wasn't sure how she felt about him until she saw him face to face. She put on a pretty good face for this picture but she was terrified.

Devin and I met 11 years ago during High School and we've always had something very special. I guess that's why I feel like we've been together forever. I could have never imagined 11 years ago that life could and would be so good. Having a husband who is so passionate about life and his role as a father makes everyday special. We've grown in so many ways over the years and I'm thankful for the experiences that have brought us closer. I can't help but fall more in love with him everyday!

We are soooo thrilled to share with you all that we are PREGNANT and we're having a BOY!

Little boy Belnap is currently in his 17th week of development and is the size of an apple. He's already changed my life by making me the sickest I've ever been during a pregnancy and forcing me to make drastic changes to my schedule. But we won't focus on that during this post. Right now let's just CELEBRATE!

It's hard to believe that five years have gone by since Crew became a part of our family. Each year with him brings more laughter and fun. Every time I get all sentimental and talk about how grown up he is he always gives me a big hug and says, "It's okay mom, I'll still be a great boy."

Here are some highlights from his birthday party.

We had a friend come to face paint the kids and as you could imagine, that was the highlight of the party. Crew chose a werewolf and the other kids followed. For the remainder of the party all the boys ran around like a pack of wolves. Even Finley joined in.

Crew really wanted a Lego party but given that there aren't many Lego decorations or games that go along with that theme we just stuck to a Lego cake.

This is Crew's friend from school. As you can see they are very close friends. She'll go home after they've been at school and tell her parents how handsome she thinks Crew looked that day.

Last year I came up with a short list of questions to ask Crew on each birthday. I thought it would be fun to look back over the years and see how his interests change.

With my brothers recent passing it was healing being back together with family for Thanksgiving. The emptiness that is felt without Brian's presence will always be there. But we feel his spirit close as we know he is watching over us.

Amongst all the sorrow and confusion I find peace everyday as I lean on my Savior, Jesus Christ for comfort. The strength and bond of a family is unlike anything else and one of our greatest blessings. That has been proven to me all throughout my life as we've gone through trials together. There's something about grieving and mourning together. Between all the mixed emotions, I have never felt greater love and compassion for my family. As we stood together and each placed a shovel full of soil upon his grave, I found peace in knowing that we will be together with him again. I am a better person today because of my brother Brian. His example of charity is something I will always carry with me.

Brian VanderSloot

Brian Frank VanderSloot returned home to his loving Heavenly Father on Thursday, Nov. 3, 2011.

Brian was born June 28, 1974, in Seattle to Frank VanderSloot and Kathleen Zundel. Brian lived in a variety of places, including Oregon, Minnesota, Singapore and Idaho, where he resided most of his life. He was the third oldest of five siblings. After Frank married Belinda Boyock and Kathleen married Wayne Walden, he enjoyed an even larger family of 18 brothers and sisters.

His family remembers the honorable way he led his life, the promises he always kept and his selfless humility. Brian graduated from Skyline High School in Idaho Falls. Brian was self-taught in computers at a very young age. He never had formal training for computers, but he was a whiz. He loved music and teaching himself to play the guitar, a talent he eventually used to sing to his children at bedtime. Starting at age 14, Brian began lifting weights and kept himself in top shape for the rest of his life. He was known for his enviable and large biceps and loved to show them off at any opportunity he could.

Brian received his bachelor's degree in business from Brigham Young University. He served an honorable mission from 1993 to 1995 in the Porte Alegre South Mission in Brazil for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He loved the Brazilians and served them with all his heart. He developed a love of the Portuguese language, which he taught to his boys. Brian served in various positions in his church faithfully and lovingly. He also was a founding member and chairman of the board at White Pine Charter School. He volunteered hundreds of hours to serve the children there.

After graduating and starting his new career at Melaleuca, he married Jennifer Coburn of Sugar City, Idaho, on July 19, 2002. They were blessed with two special boys, Connor and Isaac "Rocky." He was dedicated completely to those two little boys. He was their hero. He was passionate about their educational development in all areas. The boys loved waking up early in the morning, crawling in bed with him and cuddling. They were so affectionate with each other, cuddling, hugging and kisses.

Brian was a hardworking, talented and innovative thinker for Melaleuca. Over the last 11 years, he has worked in several management positions at Melaleuca. Most recently, Brian served as the company's director of web marketing. He has also overseen Melaleuca's operations in Singapore and served as regional director of South Central and Northwest regions as director of call center operations. His colleagues describe Brian as extremely hardworking, exceptionally talented and consummately professional. He was loved by thousands of Melaleuca employees and marketing executives around the world.

On April 7, 2011, Brian married the love of his life, Paige (Bentley Mortensen) VanderSloot, who added five wonderful children: Laurie, Megan, Rachel, Hannah and Michael. This new family was a dream come true for Brian. Brian was an affectionate and loving husband to his sweetheart. He was very hardworking and driven to be the best husband and father he could be. He put the needs of others before his own continually. As a dad, he was so hands-on, so passionate about teaching and educating his children, whether it was teaching them how to ride a bike or teaching them about exotic fruits. Brian loved adventure in whatever form he could find it. He loved racing the car fast to get a reaction out of the kids and his wife, building dry ice bombs for family viewing on the Fourth of July, and taking seven children on so many adventures. They explored the Grand Canyon, the redwood forest, the Oregon coast, Yellowstone National Park and many more places.

Brian constantly reached out to fill the needs of others. He served so many and never expected anything back. He was all you could hope for and ever want in a husband, a father, a son, a brother, an uncle, a friend and a colleague. He is loved by so many and we will miss him so very much.

Brian is survived by his wife, Paige; his precious boys, Connor, 8, and Rocky, 6; his new blessed children, Laurie, 11, Megan, 9, Rachel, 7, Hannah, 5, and Michael, 2; his parents, Frank and Belinda VanderSloot, and Kathleen and Wayne Walden; siblings, LaurieKae (Sam) Banks, Cheri (Antonio) Lima, Tiffany Smith, Matthew Trent (Charisa) VanderSloot, and Cassie VanderSloot, Sara (Chris) Schofield, Emily (Jesse) Smith, Aaron Robinson, Eliza (Jason) Ruys, Rachel (Devin) Belnap, Jairus Robinson, Sadie (Jeff) Sabin and Caleb Robinson; and many other beloved family members.

A Back Country Thanksgiving

I don't ever long for a chilly Idaho winter day but it surely wouldn't feel like Thanksgiving or Christmas without it. Snow and frigid conditions I will make an exception for on these special holidays. Other than that. I try to stay far away.

We spent Thanksgiving at the cabin as we usually do. Crew and Finley spent more time outside than they did inside.

The guys built a snow cave for the kids.

With a family of our size you have to have THREE turkeys.

Jason, Cheri, and Papa all used their own unique recipes. They were all delicious.

Gogo Belnap made a Batman cake for Crew so we could all celebrate his birthday together.

He laughed when he open his gift from grandpa and grandma because he thought they were giving him crackers.

The real gift was beneath the box and the look on his face says it all. (Harry Potter Lego game)

Our family was introduced to the Wii dancing game. We spent the rest of our time dancing the night away.

My 4th and Final....for now!

About 8 months ago Devin recruited his entire family to run a Ragnar Relay together. This took place back in October in Las Vegas. It's always hard to get someones opinion of running Ragnar during or immediately after the race. If you've ever ran one you'd know why. But if you let a week or so pass, let your body heal and catch up on sleep again. Everyone always comes back to say they had a great experience and would love to do it again. As for Dev's family, they are already trying to plan another one for next year.

The Food Chain Lesson

I came home the other night to a praying mantis on the doorstep. Devin threw it in a jar for Crew and he was thrilled to find it the next morning. First, he named him Mac. Then he insisted on feeding him. We gathered a few ants and a dead fly from the back yard and threw them into the jar. Mac didn't touch them and Crew was everything but satisfied. Then we found a little black spider, scooped it into the jar and within a minute Crew was yelling at me that he had bitten off the spiders head and was sucking out his guts.

YUCK!

Later that evening I had convinced Crew that it was time to let Mac go. My sister Sara and her family were passing through town and had stopped by our house. Crew and his cousins went in the backyard to let Mac go. Crew said his goodbyes and placed him on the edge of the fence. Then right before their eyes a lizard came from out of the bushes, grabbed Mac by the neck and ran off with him. Crew was practically in tears.

That's when the food chain lesson came in.

Pull-Apart Cinnamon Sugar Pumpkin Bread

This recipe kept haunting me. Everywhere I went online, it was there. I happened to have a girls night with some friends and it was the perfect excuse to make it. And now I'm sharing it with you all because it's absolutely delectable and the perfect treat for fall.

*I was able to double the recipe to make two loaves.

Pull-Apart Cinnamon Sugar Pumpkin Bread with Buttered Rum Glaze
(Adapted from Willow Bird Baking)

Ingredients
Bread
2 Tbsp unsalted butter
1/2 cup milk
2 1/4 teaspoons (1 envelope) active dry yeast
3/4 cup pumpkin puree
1/4 cup white sugar
1 tsp salt
2 1/2 cups bread flour

1 cup granulated sugar
2 tsp ground cinnamon
1/2 tsp fresh ground nutmeg
2 Tbsp unsalted butter

Buttered Rum Glaze
2 Tbsp unsalted butter
1/8 cup brown sugar
1 1/2 Tbsp milk
3/4 cup powdered sugar
1 Tbsp rum *

*If you're not into rum you can sub a teaspoon of vanilla extract.

Directions

In a saucepan over medium-high heat, brown 2 tablespoons of butter, letting it bubble up and turn a dark golden brown but being careful not to allow it burn (turn black). Once browned, remove the pan from the heat and carefully add the milk, return to stove and heat through.**** Pour the milk and butter into the bowl of standing mixer (fitted with a dough hook) and allow to cool so it is no longer hot but also not cool (about 100-110 degrees F). Once it has reached a warm but not hot temperature add the yeast and 1/4 cup of sugar and allow to proof (this can take up to 8 minutes, the top will look foamy and the liquid cloudy). Then add the the pumpkin, salt, and 1 cup of flour. Stir until combined then add the rest of the flour 1/2 cup at a time and knead for 6 minutes, until the dough is smooth and elastic and just slightly sticky. If the dough is too moist, add extra flour 1 tablespoon at a time.

Move dough to a lightly oiled bowl and cover with a clean towel. Allow to rise in a warm place for 60-90 minutes or until doubled in size.

While dough is rising, brown another 2 tablespoons of butter. Add the sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg and mix well.** Making sure sugar evenly absorbs the butter. Set aside. Next, grease and flour a 9x5 loaf pan and set aside.

When the dough has doubled in size, punch it down and flip out onto a clean floured surface and knead with hands for 1-2 minutes. Roll dough into a 20x12 inch rectangle.*** Evenly sprinkle the dough with the cinnamon sugar mixture and press into dough with palms of the hand. Cut the rectangle into 6 strips. Lay strips on top of each other and cut each strip into 6 even squares (cut in half then each half into thirds). Stack strips vertically into the loaf pan. Cover the pan with a clean towel and let rise for 30-45 minutes.

In the meantime preheat an oven to 350 degrees. After rising in the pan bake for 30-40 minutes (mine took 37 exactly) or until top is a deep golden brown. Immediately remove from pan onto serving dish.

To prepare the glaze, heat the butter, milk, and brown sugar in a small saucepan. Bring to boil then immediately remove the pan from the heat and stir in the rum and powdered sugar. Pour over bread immediately after removing bread from pan.

We traveled to Idaho to attended the beautiful wedding of Devin's brother Trent to his sweet girlfriend Katie. The time spent with family is always wonderful but it was even more special to share and celebrate Trent and Katie's love for each other.

I was floored both with laughter and shock when Crew brought me this balloon that he had drawn on. He walked into the room. "Hey mom, look! I drew dad holding his iPhone."

I'm not sure what happened but it happened overnight. We went from stick figures to this.

We spent our Saturday at a nearby farm picking berries. We couldn't get the raspberries to Finley fast enough. I'd throw a handful in her container and by the time I turned back around to put another handful in, the others were gone. Crew on the other hand was a little working bee. It was all work and no play for him. He was rewarded with a giant caramel apple.

Catching Crabs With Crew

It's August, which means it's time to go crabbing. This year we were able to take Crew crabbing for his first time. Every year we travel to the same area, Tillamook, Oregon. Devin's brother lives nearby so we stopped first at their place for a quick visit.

Then we were off to the coast.

The morning of crabbing the whole family always gets together for a big breakfast of pancakes and eggs.

Crabbing is usually entertainment enough but who couldn't use some catchy tunes from Crew and his harmonica.

We teamed up with my sister Cheri and part of her family. Devin and her husband always make a great team and with their daughter, Crew had a partner to be scared of the crabs with.

What's in his hand you might ask? That is the end of the pull cord that is used when starting the engine of a boat. Our engine had been stalling all morning and at one point I, the driver, couldn't get it started again. Devin tried to help me but he too couldn't get it started. Then we thought maybe Tony would have what it takes to start up our engine and it ended up being he had a little too much of it. He pulled the handle from the engine and with no way of starting the boat we were drifting fast to nowhere. When the kids heard that our boat had broken they both burst into tears and Crew cried, "I'm too young to die!"

So my parents came to our rescue and towed us to safety.

Crew wouldn't touch a single crabs but he did help pull up the rings.

We always stop at the Tillamook Cheese Factory after crabbing. Their fresh cheese and ice cream is the BEST.

And as always, for dinner that night we feast on what we caught.

School is Now in Session

As we were getting Crew dressed for his first day of preschool I pulled out a new button up shirt for him to wear. His reply was, "Mom I don't want to wear that, it's not COOL! Can I wear my Batman shirt?" With a sigh to myself and the thought that this is the last shirt I wanted him to wear, I said, "Of course!" Anything to make him feel more comfortable and confident. Then I told him to just throw on his flip flops. But a few minutes later he came into the room carrying his black Nike sneakers (which also are not my favorite) and he said, "I'm going to wear these shoes, I need to be all black." Aaaannd even though it was over 80 degrees outside he insisted on wearing his new hoodie cause it too was "cool."

Finley gets so lonely while Crew's at school. She asks me nonstop for 3 hours if it's time to pick him up.

Garage Sale Luck

On our way to the grocery store this afternoon we unintentionally came across a garage sale. Glowing in the driveway was this armoire. I was so excited to see it and jumped right out of the car. After checking it out and making sure it was functionally, which it very much was, I asked for the asking price- $175. Well guess what folks? This girl knows how to bargain. I got it for a steal of a deal at $100! It was my lucky day.

We put it in Finley's room and she's absolutely crazy about it. Stuffing all kinds of toys, dolls and blankets in it and forcing Liza to come upstairs so she can, "Come see my room!"

Mt. Whitney Summit

Mount Whitney is located in the Sierra Nevada Range in the John Muir Wilderness and Sequoia National Park east of the town Lone Pine, CA. Mount Whitney is the highest summit in the contiguous United States with an elevation of 14,505 feet. The hike is 22 miles round trip.

We had heard about this hike a few months ago and were immediately interested in accomplishing it. So, I set out to do some research and came to find that you have to apply for a permit. Then they have a lottery to determine who gets to hike and when. They only allow 100 hikers a day on the mountain. And they were completely booked for the rest of the season. Being that we missed the deadline to apply for a permit, our only way to hike would be to call everyday and see when a cancellation opened up. So that's what I did. We had had no luck for a couple of weeks then on Thursday morning I made the call again. Finally, they had some openings for Friday and this was our chance. With little preparation we threw stuff together and drove 3 hours to get our permit and were ready to hike the next day.

This was our first view of the mountain, (the highest peak in the middle of the picture). It took my breath away when I saw it. We had no idea what we were getting ourselves into. Most people take 2-3 days to hike this mountain and we had to knock it out in 1.

With less than 2 hours of sleep we set out to start our hike at 2:30 a.m.

The sun was beginning to rise and we were taken away by how beautiful our surroundings were. Then the altitude sickness set in. Fortunately we were able to fight through it and our bodies adjusted quickly.

Shortly after sunrise we reached trail camp. At this point we were half way to the top. Overnight campers were just waking up and getting ready to continue their hike.

The mountains in the background on the left is where we were headed.

This section of the trail is called 99 switchbacks. Talk about feeling the burn.

The 99 switchbacks were over but we still had a long way to go. The trail camp is where that little lake is in the middle.

And this was the incredible view on the other side.

We reached the summit at 11 a.m. We were beyond exhausted but the view and feeling made it all worth it. There is nothing like feeling like you are on top of the world with a view at every turn.

The backs of those mountains is where we had just come from.

After about 20 minutes at the summit we started our descent. We had to look back at every chance we got to see what we had just done. Can you see the black dot of hikers in the middle of the picture?

Also, in the middle of this picture is the shelter.

One last look at our mountain after climbing down. It was mind blowing to think that within a couple of hours we had just been up there.

We had crossed behind that entire mountain range that is in the background.

Heading back down the mountain we were able to see what we missed while hiking up in the dark. The most beautiful views I have ever seen.

We reached our car again around 4 p.m. Words can't describe the pain and exhaustion that was felt but every bit of it was worth the experience. I have a whole new respect for mountains and the beauty that is within them.

Hit and Run

Crew just finished his first season of T-ball. He really is an all-start, if I may gloat for a moment. He's been a natural at all the sports he's played. Although, he's not very combative because he worries he'll hurt the kids he's playing with, (he has the biggest heart). T-ball was perfect for him. He could shine on his own without too much contact with others.

We traveled to Idaho to celebrate the 4th of July with our families. I collected hundreds of pictures over our many days there. Here are just a handful.

This is a tree house my dad spent days building with some of his grandsons. It's been in my parents back yard for years but this was our first time up to it.

A game of paintball seems to always be a must with the boys when everyone is home. Liza and I stepped in this time to show them how a real game is played. Not really...these boys are so serious (as you can see) it's kind of scary playing with them.

We enjoyed the 4th evening under the fireworks.

Devin and I journeyed on a 6.5 mile hike to the Hollywood sign. Once we reached the top there was a beautiful 360 degree view of Los Angeles.

This is the actual Batcave from the 60's TV series Batman. It was near our hike trail so we wanted to check it out.

This is the house my mother grew up in-along with her 7 siblings. Right in the heart of L.A. It's only a few minutes away from Devin work so we detoured here on our way to the hike. I had only seen it once and it was years ago and I wanted Devin to see it as well. The hill that this house is set on is one of the steepest hills in L.A.

We had thought for sure Idaho Falls had the smallest Zoo around but Orange County proved us wrong. The OC Zoo consisted of a couple of bears, some rabbits, a snake, some deer, pigs and birds and I think there was a bobcat in there somewhere. I almost forgot about the goats that Finley was terrified of. They also had a petting portion with goats. The train was definitely the highlight.

School's Out For Summer

Crew performed in his pre-school graduation this week. Although, he did not graduate. He has a late November b-day so we've decided to hang onto him for another year. But I have to say it was still a sweet moment. They learn and grow so rapidly I feel like I can hardly enjoy the moments.

Father-Son Campout

Crew is officially a camper.

He and Devin met up with a large group of other men and their sons to campout for a night. I think the experience set the standard pretty high for Crew when it comes to camping. He had grilled ribs for dinner, more treats than he could handle, including smores. And he spent hours with the other kids playing Star Wars flashlight tag. And according to Dev, Crew slept better in the tent than he does at home in his own bed. Hmmmm! What does that mean??

Us girls wanted to have a little fun of our own so we went out for the night also. Our first stop was Cheesecake Factory. Then we thought we'd step up Finley and Hazel's bling. So, we bought them new pretties (earrings). And Finley would never forgive me if we left the mall without riding on the Choo Choo (Trolley). She is obsessed. And I would never forgive myself if I left the mall without having Pinkberry. I am obsessed.

Devin and Crew shared the ultimate father-son night. It all started when Devin decided to watch Rocky IV with Crew. I wasn't a witness but according to Devin, Crew got so into it that he was jumping out of his seat and couldn't sit still through most of the movie. And as soon as the movie ended Crew was ready for his first training session and boxing match. Crew as Rocky and Devin as Ivan Drago.

So Cal Ragnar Relay 2011

We ganged together with some friends to conquer another Ragnar Relay. We spent 32 hours wearing and tearing down our bodies. Running all day, all night, then all day again. Each of us ran 3 different legs. Devin's totaled 20 miles and mine, 17 miles. We must have used over 40 different port a potties. Emptied over 60 bottles of water and shuffled through hundreds of songs and we did it all on 3 hours of sleep. We were the California Rollers-Roller Derby Team.

Our little lady had her birthday last week. Devin and I were out of town on her special day but lucky for us she didn't know any better so we celebrated the day after. I'm not sure what went wrong with her gift but she was totally freaked out by it. Until it was uncovered...of course.

This little girl is full of life and energy. She's crazy about the two boys that are in her life and she can't live without her pretties (accessories). She loves to wrestle and be tickled and she would eat cheese and bananas all day if I'd let her.

Congratulations to my brother who married his beautiful bride last week.

Since it was such a quick trip to Idaho for the wedding I left the kids home with Devin and flew solo-which was amazing. I enjoyed a lot of time to myself and caught up with my loved ones that I live away from.

A visit to Idaho Falls isn't complete without cruising 17th Street and hitting up Taco Bell (Caleb's favorite).

My Birthday happened to be the day that I flew into Idaho so we had a little celebration. Hooray for 28!

Karate King

Crew's always telling us he wants to learn karate so we threw him into an intro to Karate class to see if it really would be something he'd like to do. No surprise to us he loved it and picked up on all the moves right away. But there was one thing he had trouble remembering.

In Karate when the teacher is talking to the student, the student is always suppose to answer saying, yes sensei or no sensei. (Sensei is Japanese for teacher). Since Crew's thoughts lately are focused on Kings and Knights he kept answering, yes sire and no sire. Except he says it more like, siah and with an accent. The teacher got a little frustrated. I probably should have explained to him why Crew was answering that way but all I could do was laugh.

Liza and I homemade strawberry jam this week. She had done it before but it was my first time. I kept asking myself why I haven't been making it every year of my married life. Especially since we've lived in California and are surrounded by the most delicious, fresh strawberries.

Making the jam was easy but it is even easier to eat. It is dangerously addictive. And of course we had to have something to eat with our jam so we whipped up a batch of warm homemade rolls. Mmmmmm! Really, there is nothing better.

ROOMMATES

We moved into a house about a month ago and it has been wonderful.

At the same time, Liza and Jason just happened to be moving to our neck of the wood so we decided to all move into the house together. One big happy family we are! It's fun and crazy. The kids spend all day in the backyard. Crew spends hours at a time trying to catch the lizards. If you watch him it's actually alarming how fast he is when he's going after one.

Our house is in a culdesac which makes it perfect for the kids to ride their bikes around. And we have great neighbors. The kids had no problems with the adjustments and Crew and Finley are sleeping just fine in their own rooms. Although Crew will still occasionally ask if he can sleep in Fin's room.

Sara Rocks Cali!

My big sister Sara escaped the Idaho tundra and came to sunny California for a visit.

Eliza and I (who are living together for the next year) were so excited to have Sara grace us with her presence. We showed her all around L.A., got pedi's, introduced her to Pinkberry, went shopping, relaxed at the beach, and got her "feathered."

We love you Sara. Thanks for giving us an excuse to have a fabulous weekend.

A New Chapter

In one week we will be moving and with that move will come a lot of changes. The biggest change will be the separation of Crew and Finley. In their room is where their inseparable bond was established. If one's in there playing, the other has to be. They get it dirty together and they have to clean it together. Where one won't go to bed without the other. Unless Finley is taking her nap. Which in that case, Crew has to be the one to tuck her in, give her kisses and sing her songs.

I'm a little uneasy to see the repercussions that might take place from putting a wall between them. Crew claims he's excited to have his own room. But what little boy wouldn't be. It has glow in the dark stars on the ceiling and the walls are bright blue and green-YIKES! (We'll be taking care of that).

I can't express how grateful I am for the space that we're getting and I can't express how grateful I am for the little space that we've had. Because I know without it my little monsters wouldn't have the relationship that they have today.

Date night the VEGAS way!

Out of all the times we've been to Vegas, we've never had a night out on the town. Eliza and Jason move next month which means our Vegas days are over. We decided to take one last trip there this weekend and go out with a bang. We got a babysitter, made some dinner reservations, got our drink on (Monster style), and went dancing.

One of the most important qualities you can teach your child. To have the courage to accomplish certain tasks. And that it's okay to fail but don't ever give up.

Crew learned this weekend how to ride his bike without training wheels. We couldn't have been prouder parents. Sounds funny I know-it's just ridding a bike. But the true joy came from Crew's reactions. He was self-assured, fearless and so proud. You almost would have thought he knew how to ride all along, it came so naturally to him.

My next 4 posts highlight our Christmas Break. We traveled to Idaho on Christmas Eve and stayed until the New Year. Unfortunately we didn't get the chance to go sledding or build a snowman but all our other activities kept us busy.

If you had noticed the uglyness of what was growing on Devin's upper lip, NO, he wasn't growing it because he felt like it. It was all about the Ugly Mustache Contest. What you see in these pictures is ALL NATURAL. I'll let you be the judge of who's is the ugliest

We also had an Ugly Pajama Contest.

Devin wouldn't wear the silk leopard boxers I got him so he decided to wear an old pair of my pj's. Hence the 3 sizes too small.

For the last couple of years Devin's mom has thrown a christmas dinner party that focuses on a country that is in their heritage. We learn about certain things from their culture and she cooks and serves their traditional foods. This year it was England.

I'm an extremely light sleeper. For example, I get woken up from Crew's little footsteps walking into my bedroom at night.

Last night I was woken up to our bathroom door being closed. When I looked up I could see the light from the bathroom shining into the hallway. Knowing that it was just Crew who had woken up to go to the bathroom, I laid my head back down waiting for him to finish his business and come get me to tuck him back into bed. I heard the toilet flush and the door open and was waiting for his head to pop up on the side of my bed to say, "Mom will you tuck me in?" But the seconds passed and I heard no footsteps. So I got up to see what was going on and when I couldn't find him anywhere I looked into his bedroom. There he was sitting up in his bed straightening out his blanket preparing to cover himself up. Then he did and he laid down to go back to sleep. Now I think most moms would rejoice at this milestone. But for me, I didn't mind getting woken up to his precious face asking me for help. It was just another chance for me to hold and kiss him. So when I saw that he had tucked himself back into his own bed, my heart broke and I thought, he doesn't need me anymore. There in the hall at 3am I had a moment. It wasn't my first moment and I know it won't be my last. I never thought mothering would come with so many precious moment and be so fulfilling.

The other night Devin asked Crew what they should get me for Christmas. And Crew's response was, "Lets wrap ourselves up like presents and when mommy opens us, we'll jump out and give her Christmas kisses."

He hit it right on. There could be no greater gift.

Every little girl needs a Christmas dress. I couldn't find one that I liked for Finley but I found fabric that I loved. I realized while making this dress, how fun it is to have a little girl to dress up. I think it's because she's older now and wears clothes easier. I also realized that before she starts to get an opinion of her own about her wardrobe, I need to start dressing her up more and how I desire. She's only a little girl once.

20 months

Finley is growing up so fast that I seem to loose track of how old she is. Does anyone else feel that their second child grew up twice as fast as their first? She's our little girl now. There is nothing baby about her anymore. She has the most lively personality and always keeps us busy and entertained.

I think someone needs a purse or two for Christmas.

Santa proved to be more delightful than I expected. We couldn't get a smile out of Finley but we didn't get any tears either. Crew told santa he wanted a lightsaber. He already has one but he keeps saying he wants a REAL one.

Turkey Weekend

Our Thanksgiving was spent in St. George with Devin's parents and little brother Andrew. The kids love nothing more than being with family. Finley crushed on her uncle the whole time, Devin and I were able to go on a date and Crew fished the weekend away with his new fishing pole.

Crew's birthday was on Monday. Although we had already celebrated it twice in the previous week, we thought he still needed a cake on his special day. This big boy brings so much joy and excitement into our lives. He's a wonderful big bother and has the biggest heart. We feel so blessed.

Crew turns 4 at the end of the month and had been begging for a big celebration. The little boy got his big wish. We threw him his first birthday party this weekend. Unfortunately the weather didn't cooperate. Because of the rain we had to move the party from the park to our place. We were crammed but made it work.

My mom surprised us and came into town the day before. Eliza and Jason also came down to help us celebrate. We were thankful for the extra hands otherwise Devin and I would have been greatly outnumbered.

Everyone got personalized dog tags when they arrived then we did a roll call with salutes.

Tug of War. At one point Devin tried to take on all the kids. He lost.

Then we used grenade water balloons to bomb Devin.

He was the perfect target. The kids loved it.

Injured soldier. The kids had to find the injured soldier, bring him to safety and fix his wounds.

They also played pin the tank on the battle field. (No pictures)

And of course a pinata. I think every party needs one of these. They are always a huge hit.

We went to the beach today and as usual, I took my camera with every intention of shooting over 100 picture of my kids frolicking in the sand-for the millionth time. But for some reason the only picture that got taken was of Devin and I. And it was taken by Crew.

We had a great Halloween this year. It seemed like we had an event every day this week where collecting candy was involved. We have way more candy than we can handle.

After almost every house, Fin would sit in the driveway and look at what she was given. The suckers were her favorite. She opened 5 of them throughout the night.

After running the Southern California Ragnar Relay with some friends I was able to convince some of my family members to run one in Las Vegas. We lived out of vans for two days, used nothing but porta potties and bushes and slept wherever we could. All while taking turns running, to cover 195 miles across Las Vegas.

It was awesome and we can't wait to run in another one.

It's nice to be reminded now and then of how things use to be. Some might say we have it easier, some might say we have it harder. For me, I think I would have gone nuts by now if I had to milk my own cows, churn my own butter, heard the animals, beat my rugs and hang a laundry line. I will be forever grateful for modern technology.
